It is good that we keep having these special elections. Even though this district voted for Greene the republican by about a 2/3rds margin in 2024. With the momentum clearly on democrats side, it will be interesting to see if a democrat can get to a two person runoff in this district. Tomorrow, if any candidate garners over 50% of the vote that person will win outright. However there are 17 candidates running for this seat so the expectation that anyone will get 50% of tomorrows vote is minimal at best. So getting either the most votes or the second most votes is the real expectation for all these candidates.
Democrats have a candidate with enough name recognition that if he were able to get into the top two could actually pose a challenge to whatever republican candidate emerges as a top two voter getter. To me this is all about percentages and changing voting patterns of disgruntled previous republican voters. This vote tomorrow could well be a bellwether event to mirror other districts that voted comfortably for trump in 2024. The mood has soured on trump and his ability to attract independents and moderate democrats which has broken down considerably. Even moderately social and economically conscious republicans are turning away from trump. So to say the least that we democrats have an opportunity in Georgia tomorrow is not embellishment.
When the results of the actual vote are tabulated and posted we will see whether traditional percentages stay the same or if there is movement toward the democrats. I suspect that like all over the country since trump began his disingenuous second term that the numbers will continue to increase for democrats. Will it be enough to get the democratic candidate to a runoff? That is my hope. Because if this race does go to a runoff with a democrat and a republican then we will get a true measure of the disintegration of the republican base. The republicans have a large base to protect them ultimately in this district but if enough have had enough of trump then this district may reasonably elect a democrat in June.
