A last ditch effort by trump to regulate mail in voting is under review by the supreme court. Even though two decisions from lower federal courts stopped trump and his executive order's misuse of the postal service as a gatekeeper for mail in ballots. States, along with Congress passing laws, are given sole constitutional power to run their elections but with the executive order trump is seeking to bypass the states and Congress to turn a neutral delivery service into another level of voter disenfranchisement. The postal rule is about to be officially announced on August 26th which will then give the supreme court something to weigh judgment either for or against. In normal times this would be a nonstarter for a constitutionally minded court. However we do not live in normal times.
For the supreme court to allow this trump executive order to succeed it would need to create some kind of logic that at present doesn't exist. The law is simple. The states control voting in their states, less any law from Congress. This executive order would void that making the president the overseer of elections. Although this concerns mail in voting, the slippery slope of taking away from the states their right to control their states voting would begin. Therefore the supreme court must find that the trump executive order is clearly unconstitutional as we all see it is. No amount of pretzeling of premises will make a logical conclusion. The supreme court should do what is correct and dismiss this executive order out of hand.
If somehow the 6 republican justices sink to the lowest part of the rotten barrel and approves this trump executive order then we the people must respond by voting in person. Take the mail in voting out of the equation. For some this is impossible. But turning the impossible into the possible is what we must do! If trump does take away mail in voting with his executive order he will also alienate any who have not made up their mind to vote. An attack on our democracy through removing an acceptable format for voting is a bridge too far for we the people to accept. I suspect trump would like to see us out in the streets calling for him to resign so that he could unleash his beasts on us. So be it if that is what the supreme court allows him to do!
This blog will be an advocate for compassion, curiosity and human survival. When these elements of human nature are being denied, wholly, severally or individually, less than positive human traits are the outcome. It is my wish and hope that my reasonings on a variety of subjects will provide the readers of this blog with personal and public insights. My only motive is to provide a forum for advancing enlightenment. Carl Clark.
