The passage of The Equal Rights For Women Amendment in Virginia this last January 15th makes for a total of 38 states that have ratified the Amendment to our Constitution over the last 47 years. Hawaii was the first state to ratify the amendment on March 22, 1972. Since then 37 other states have ratified the amendment, https://www.equalrightsamendment.org/era-ratification-map. Although this ratification map still does not include Virginia it is representative of who is left that has not ratified the amendment and when the other states did ratify the amendment.
Curiously it is a majority of southern states that have not wanted to let our women be equal partners in our society. The trump and republican strongholds that work hard to deny rights to not only women but to people of color when it comes to voting. It should be obvious to all that the republican party and it's representatives are the ones who are undercutting democracy at every turn so long as their privilege and advantage system maintains the status quo. For the more than half of the American citizenry who reside in America this is unacceptable. Southern men and surprisingly too many southern women are against the idea that we are all created equal.
This is just unacceptable to the many of us who live in the reality of modern and innovative thinking. So although it took 47 years for the ERA to pass the required 3/4 state minimum it was under a time limit then of 7 years to complete the required 3/4s. Yet as has been shown, Congress can adjust or wipe out the time limit if it chooses and is on firm legal ground to do so, https://www.equalrightsamendment.org/pathstoratification. The states part of the ERA ratification has now been attained. It is just the time limit question that needs to be addressed by Congress. Now is the time to act on this amendment and hopefully all congress persons who have a Mother, sister, daughter, aunt, cousin who are women will see the necessity of making it embedded in our constitution that women are of the same equality as we men!
